Estimated
1Vehicle & battery

Choose the Tesla, then refine the battery and energy-use assumptions if needed.

Vehicle defaults are active. Model-level estimated default; EPA ENERGY STAR: 2024 Tesla Model 3 RWD
2Local electricity rate

Start with the official state average, then replace it with your bill or utility plan for a personal estimate.

U.S. average: 16.48¢/kWh. Loaded as a planning estimate. Replace it with your off-peak or on-peak utility rate when available.

Source: EIA Electric Power Annual, Table 2.10, 2024 final annual data. State averages are planning references, not individual utility tariffs.

3Charging method & session

Set this charge window and one charging mix. Supercharging is always the remainder.

Home 80%Supercharger 20%

Move one slider. The two shares always total 100%, so the estimate cannot fail because of a mismatched mix.

4Mileage & fuel comparison

Estimate recurring cost and compare it with a similar gasoline vehicle.

How the Tesla charging cost calculator works

The calculator keeps a single charging session separate from long-term driving cost. Every result comes from the inputs shown above.

One charging session

Battery energy added = usable capacity × (target SOC - starting SOC).

Wall energy = battery energy added ÷ charging efficiency.

Session cost = wall energy × the home or Supercharger rate.

Example: a 75 kWh usable battery charged from 20% to 80% adds 45 kWh. At 90% efficiency, the charger supplies about 50 kWh.

Long-term driving cost

EPA/DOE monthly wall energy = miles × wall-side Wh/mi ÷ 1,000. The published efficiency value already includes charging loss, so the calculator does not add that loss again.

Tesla trip-meter mode

A Wh/mi value read from the Tesla Trips or Energy screen is battery-side. In that mode, wall energy = miles × Wh/mi ÷ 1,000 ÷ charging efficiency.

What official U.S. data says

16.48¢/kWh

2024 U.S. residential average from EIA Table 2.10. As of now, this is the latest finalized annual state-level dataset available from EIA.

11.51¢ to 42.86¢

State-average range, from North Dakota to Hawaii.

$4.12

Per 100 miles for the 250 Wh/mi Model 3 preset at the U.S. average rate.

$13.73

Estimated 0-100% home charge for 75 kWh usable capacity at 90% efficiency and the U.S. average rate.

More than battery size × rate

Compared with a basic charging-cost formula, this calculator adds:

  • Separate scopes: one session, full-charge benchmark, distance cost, monthly budget, and annual budget.
  • A valid charging mix: one slider always keeps Home and Supercharger shares at 100%.
  • Energy-basis control: EPA/DOE wall-side estimates and Tesla battery-side trip data use different formulas.
  • Local inputs: official state averages remain editable for a real utility tariff or live Supercharger price.
  • A like-for-like gas check: recurring energy cost is compared separately from ownership costs.

Home electricity is a recurring cost; the circuit and charger are a separate one-time project. Estimate panel, wiring, permit, and trenching work with the Tesla home charger installation cost guide.

Tesla charging cost by model

Comparison examples use a $0.17/kWh home rate and 1,000 miles per month. Full-charge cost uses 90% efficiency; monthly cost uses EPA/DOE wall-side Wh/mi without adding charging loss twice.

Why the result is still an estimate

Usable battery capacity varies by model year, trim, software buffer, temperature, and battery condition. Driving energy also changes with speed, weather, elevation, tires, cabin conditioning, and accessory loads.

State electricity prices are planning averages, not utility tariffs. Tesla Supercharger prices can vary by location and plug-in time. Replace both rates with the prices you actually expect to pay.

Sources and limitations

Tesla does not publish one stable usable-capacity figure for every model year and trim. Supercharger prices are not fetched live.
